With undeniable force, Koenraad Tinel (°1934, Ghent, Belgium) has been building up his handcrafted universe for more than half a century. In UDSJUEN, the catalogue accompanying the expo with the same name – Ghent 2019 – , a light is shed again on this search for the intangible relation between the material and the mythic, between the rational and the sexual; In a visual style that is still hard to categorize. Shaped out of rough materials his work hides a fragile dance of diverse themes, out of which a pictorial sophistication emerges.
Koenraad Tinel’s work showcases in the roughest of forms the timeless beauty of an extreme vital energy; that of a desire flirting with death, a ruthless force that connects man and animal.
At the centre of UDSJUEN is the ancient Yakut story of the same name, which Tinel has illustrated with never before published drawings. This publication offers an overview of Tinel’s oeuvre during the period of 2015-’19, supplemented with essential work of the past 25 years. David Van Reybrouck writes the introduction of the book.
